Let me start with a little confession. Yesterday? It was rough. I felt like a human teapot—on the verge of boiling over into tears all day. And when I did cry, I quickly wiped those tears away because, well, “toughen up” and “stop being a baby” were phrases that have stuck with me since forever. Sound familiar?
As I sat at my desk with my messy bun, sleepy eyes, and a headache that wouldn’t quit, I had a moment of clarity. I wasn’t taking care of myself—not really. Sure, I was doing the basics like eating and showering, but real self-care? Nowhere to be found. And it hit me: could neglecting myself be why I was snapping at my husband, struggling to focus, and feeling so completely drained? Spoiler alert: the answer is a big, resounding yes.
The Lightbulb Moment
Last night, I decided to experiment. I grabbed my trusty (but neglected) grounding blanket, queued up a guided meditation, and let the soothing voice guide me away from my intrusive thoughts. For the first time in weeks, I felt calm. Grounded. And when I woke up this morning? I felt different. Refreshed. Ready to tackle my day with a clear head and a lighter heart.
I realized two big things:
Why Morning Meditation Matters
This morning, I made the intentional choice to meditate first thing. I picked a guided meditation that focused on overcoming limiting beliefs (because let’s face it, we all have those pesky “I’m not good enough” or “I’ll never succeed” thoughts).
As I followed the journey, I visualized deflecting those limiting beliefs with a protective shield and stepping into a room filled with affirmations. I could feel my energy shift—my vibration rising—and it was exhilarating.
Meditation is like hitting a reset button for your mind. It helps you:
Self-Care: Not Just a Buzzword
Meditation is just one part of my self-care toolkit. Here’s what I’ve learned: self-care isn’t about bubble baths (though those are great); it’s about consistently showing up for yourself. It’s recognizing when you’re running on empty and doing something about it.
Here are my favorite self-care practices, complete with real-life stories to inspire you:
Each morning, I jot down three things I’m grateful for. This practice shifts my focus from what’s going wrong to what’s going right. Today, I was thankful for:
When you focus on gratitude, you train your mind to see the positives—even on tough days.
This is my go-to for shaking off negative energy and starting the day with clarity. Whether it’s a 5-minute session or a deep dive into affirmations, meditation works wonders for regulating your nervous system and setting the tone for your day.
Journaling helps me untangle my thoughts and find solutions to challenges. On bad days, it’s where I pour out my frustrations. On good days, it’s where I dream big without limits. It’s my safe space to reflect, release, and grow.
As a self-employed coach, I can easily get lost in my work. I’ve learned to set a “cut-off time” so I can prioritize dinner with my husband or a walk on the beach. Balance isn’t optional—it’s necessary.
Whether it’s listening to music, walking in nature, or playing silly games on my phone, carving out time for joy is a must. Even 10 minutes can turn my mood around.
My husband and I make it a point to laugh every day—even on the tough ones. Laughter isn’t just good for the soul; it’s the ultimate vibe lifter.
Energy is contagious. Surround yourself with people who light you up, not drag you down. Life’s too short to hang out with energy vampires.
Learning to say “no” without guilt has been life-changing. It’s not selfish—it’s self-respect. Boundaries protect your peace and preserve your energy.
Why Self-Care Matters—and How to Start
When you prioritize self-care, you’re not just tending to your own needs—you’re laying the foundation for every aspect of your life. It’s the energy source that fuels how you show up for your loved ones, your work, and your personal goals. Without it, even the simplest tasks can feel overwhelming, leaving you depleted and disconnected.
If you’ve been feeling off, ask yourself: When was the last time I truly took care of myself? If it’s been a while, let this moment be your turning point. Self-care isn’t an indulgence or an afterthought—it’s the baseline for everything else.
The beauty of self-care is that it’s flexible and attainable. You don’t need to overhaul your life or carve out hours in your day to make it work. Start with something small: meditate for five minutes, jot down one thing you’re grateful for, take a walk in the fresh air, or call someone who lifts your spirits.
These small but meaningful actions build over time, creating a ripple effect that enhances your mental clarity, emotional balance, and physical well-being. They remind you of your worth and help you realign when life feels chaotic.
If you’ve been neglecting yourself, let this be your gentle reminder to pause and realign. You don’t need to have it all figured out, and there’s no perfect way to start. Just choose one act of self-care today and let it grow from there.
Because the most important relationship you’ll ever have is the one with yourself. Let’s make self-care non-negotiable—not someday, but starting today.
